Human beings face various problems in their lives, and only those who are able to identify problems can prioritize them and distinguish content relevant to their present concerns from irrelevant content. In other words, a person who does not understand the nature of a problem will not be able to determine which issues are essential and which are nonessential within the intellectual and cultural environment surrounding them. It can also be argued that the fundamental problems of any discipline constitute the source and foundation of that discipline. Therefore, clarifying the “problems” of a discipline is one of the essential steps in establishing and indigenizing that discipline, as it can guide research and prevent digression, fragmented efforts, and unnecessary or unproductive work. Accordingly, using a descriptive-analytical approach, this article seeks to clarify the structure and principal topics of the emerging field of the cognitive sciences of religion and to identify its most important issues in relation to Iranian society. It aims to provide the necessary groundwork for appropriately addressing this emerging and important field and to offer a roadmap for essential and useful research in this area.
