Abstract

The belief in the Hereafter (Maʿād) is one of the fundamental doctrines of the monotheistic religions, including Islam. This belief exerts a profound influence on both the worldly and the eternal dimensions of human life. In contemporary society, particularly among young and middle-aged people, the weakening of religious beliefs, inappropriate speech and conduct, the pursuit of personal desires, and similar challenges are increasingly evident. These conditions highlight the need to reinforce and moderate human behavior through remembrance of and belief in the Hereafter. In Nahj al-Balāghah, Imam Ali (A.S.) discusses the role of belief in the Hereafter throughout his sermons, letters, and sayings. The findings of this study indicate that such belief plays a significant role in shaping both individual and social conduct, encouraging individuals to exercise greater care over their words and actions. It also contributes to strengthening religious convictions and promoting appropriate patterns of behavior within society. Moreover, attention to the consequences of the Hereafter plays a constructive role in fostering a spiritual and faithful way of life, thereby laying the foundation for the development of a morally and spiritually grounded society. From the perspective of Imam Ali (A.S.), belief in the Hereafter makes individuals active, persevering, and resilient; strengthens their sense of duty and responsibility; awakens them from heedlessness; reduces their attachment to worldly life; grants them inner peace; encourages virtuous conduct; and liberates them from the domination of selfish desires and moral vices. One of the principal contributions of this study is its explanation of the role and effects of belief in the Hereafter in both individual and social life and its application to the needs of contemporary society.
